A pet that has eaten kibble for years has a gut adapted to kibble. Switch overnight and you'll likely meet soft stool, gas, or a skipped meal. Switch gradually and most pets transition smoothly within a week — and many picky eaters discover real appetite for the first time.
The 7-day schedule
- Days 1–2: 25% fresh food mixed into 75% of their current food.
- Days 3–4: 50/50. Watch the stool — slightly softer is normal; full diarrhea means hold at the previous ratio for two more days.
- Days 5–6: 75% fresh, 25% old food.
- Day 7: 100% fresh. Welcome to the other side.
Tips that make it easier
- Slightly warm the fresh food (room temperature, never hot) — aroma is the strongest appetite trigger for both dogs and cats.
- Keep meal times fixed. Down for 20 minutes, then lifted. A predictable rhythm beats free-feeding during transition.
- Cats need extra patience. Some take two to three weeks. Never starve a cat into switching — cats that stop eating can develop liver problems quickly. Mix, persist, and go slower if needed.
- A spoon of bone broth over the bowl is the most effective persuasion we know for reluctant eaters.
What to expect in the first month
Typical changes pet parents report: smaller and firmer stools (more of the food is actually absorbed), more stable energy, and a shinier coat over four to eight weeks. Water drinking often drops slightly — fresh food already carries much of the moisture they need. That's normal.
When to involve your vet
If your pet has a medical condition, is very young, very old, or pregnant, plan the switch with your veterinarian. Vomiting, refusal to eat beyond 24 hours (12 for cats), or blood in stool are reasons to stop and call.
FAQ
Can I switch a puppy or kitten to fresh food?
Yes — young animals usually adapt fastest, but portion and balance matter more during growth, so coordinate with your vet.
My dog ate the fresh food and left the kibble. Can I just skip the transition?
Some dogs handle a fast switch fine. If stools stay normal for 48 hours, continue; if not, return to mixing.
How is the food delivered and stored?
Mila's meals arrive chilled every two weeks in Amman. Refrigerate what you'll use within 3–4 days and freeze the rest.
