What freeze-drying actually is

Freeze-drying is preservation by subtraction. The ingredient — a sardine, a chicken heart, a piece of liver — is frozen solid, then placed under vacuum so the ice turns directly into vapor and leaves. No oven, no frying, no high heat. What remains is the same piece of food with its water removed: the structure, the nutrients and the concentrated aroma stay where they were.

Because almost nothing can grow without water, freeze-dried food keeps for months with no preservatives at all. That's the quiet trick: the shelf life comes from physics, not from chemicals on the ingredient list.

Honest wording: "minimally processed", not "unprocessed"

You'll see brands call freeze-dried treats "unprocessed". Strictly, freeze-drying is a process — one step, with nothing added. The fair comparison is what a typical biscuit goes through: milling, mixing with flour and sugar, binding, extruding or baking at high heat, spray-coating, preserving, coloring. One subtraction versus seven additions. That's the difference worth paying attention to.

Reading a treat label: freeze-dried vs biscuits

• Ingredient list. Ours is one word — "sardines" or "chicken liver". A typical supermarket biscuit lists cereals first (flour is cheap filler), then "meat and animal derivatives" — a category, not an ingredient — then sugars, colorings and preservatives.
• Where the calories come from. Biscuit calories are mostly flour, sugar and fat; freeze-dried calories are the protein and natural fat of the meat itself.
• Portion control. Freeze-dried pieces break into pea-sized rewards, so a whole training session costs the calories of one biscuit — the math behind the 10% treat rule.
• Allergies and sensitive stomachs. One ingredient means nothing hidden. If your pet reacts, you know exactly what to eliminate.

Which treat does what

A treat being healthy doesn't make more of it healthier.

Why do freeze-dried treats cost more than biscuits?

Because you're buying meat, not flour. A pouch of freeze-dried sardines is whole sardines; a box of biscuits is mostly cereal with meat flavoring. Per reward — broken into training-size pieces — the gap shrinks a lot.

Are freeze-dried treats good for cats too?

Often more than for dogs — single-ingredient fish or heart matches what an obligate carnivore is built to eat, and most cats find them irresistible.
