The 10% rule

Trainers and vets agree on one number: treats should stay under 10% of daily calories. Beyond that you're not rewarding behavior, you're unbalancing a diet. The practical problem is that most commercial biscuits are calorie bombs of flour, sugar and fat — three biscuits and a small dog has spent its entire treat budget.

Why single-ingredient treats solve this

A piece of freeze-dried chicken liver or beef lung is just that — the ingredient, with the water removed. Nothing added, which means:

• You control portions precisely. Pieces break into pea-sized rewards; a training session can use twenty micro-rewards for the calories of one biscuit.
• The smell does the work. Freeze-drying concentrates aroma, and aroma is what dogs work for. Liver is the classic "high-value" reward trainers reach for when teaching recall.
• No mystery reactions. One ingredient means easy elimination if your dog has a sensitive stomach or allergies.

Using treats so training sticks

• Reward within one second of the behavior — timing teaches more than quantity.
• Match value to difficulty. Everyday sits earn a small piece; coming back off-leash at the park earns the liver jackpot.
• Fade to intermittent rewards once a behavior is solid — unpredictable rewards make behaviors stronger, not weaker.
• Use part of dinner as training currency on heavy training days to keep total calories flat.

Which treat for which pet?
