The desert design problem

A mouse is about 70% water. A bowl of kibble is about 10%. The domestic cat's ancestors got nearly all their fluid from what they ate, so cats evolved a famously weak thirst drive — they simply don't feel compelled to drink enough to compensate for dry food. The result, for many indoor cats, is a life lived mildly dehydrated.

Why it matters: kidneys and urinary health

Chronic low moisture concentrates the urine, which is a known contributor to urinary crystals, cystitis and long-term strain on the kidneys — among the most common medical problems in adult cats. Veterinary advice for cats with urinary issues almost always begins with the same instruction: increase water intake. The easiest way to do that isn't a fancier fountain — it's food that contains water the way nature intended, at roughly 70% moisture like our gently cooked chicken recipe.

Cats are obligate carnivores

Moisture is half the story. Cats also require nutrients that exist only in animal tissue — taurine for the heart and eyes, preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid. A cat can't thrive on what a dog or human eats well on. That's why our cat meals are built around real muscle meat and organs, not grain bulked with "meat flavor."

Practical ways to add moisture today

• Move to moisture-rich fresh food, transitioning gradually — see our 7-day switch plan (cats may need 2–3 weeks).
• Add a spoon of warm bone broth to meals — most cats consider this a delicacy.
• Offer wide, shallow water bowls away from the food bowl and the litter box.

FAQ

How much water does a cat need daily?

Roughly 50 ml per kilogram of body weight from all sources combined. A 4 kg cat on moisture-rich food may drink very little — and that's fine, because the food is doing the work.

My cat only eats dry food and refuses everything else. Is that dangerous?

Not immediately, but it's worth patiently changing. Mix tiny amounts of fresh food into the dry over several weeks. Never starve a cat into switching.

Are signs of dehydration visible?

Subtle ones: concentrated dark urine, constipation, lethargy. Gently lift the skin at the shoulder — if it returns slowly rather than instantly, talk to your vet.
